The Swap

Hi! We're trying to upswap our way to keeping our house!

Initially, we tried starting with our home theatre projector screen set, but we think it was too big an item for the first swap. (Scroll to the bottom of the page for more about that.)

So we went simple and changed it to a block from what our house is made of...which is what the rest of this page is about...

And then we found someone willing to swap their awesome cot with us and agreed to swap a potted lemon tree! See more about our first swap here.

Re-starting the Swap

Upswap us something for a piece of our house! (Update 4.3.18: Note this is no longer available, we've done our first swap now. See our home page on this blog for the latest swap item.)

We're starting again with a very small item to try and get the momentum happening. This is easy for someone to swap something with as it's not worth much! These clay bricks cost us about $30 each but they're not worth anything because we have a handful left and can't sell them. Taking all and any offers for something to swap for it!

These bricks are great as a coffee table or plant holder. We've shown in the photos how some nice wood can be attached to the top. Our 2 year old stained the wood with a home made stain made from vinegar and rusted steel wool - a totally natural piece of furniture with no nasty chemical smells. This particular one has a big circular hole which can be used as a magazine rack. The brick could also be painted. A real talking piece for your living space!

We started out on this swap journey thinking a bigger item would get things rolling sooner - see below for more details about the home theatre projector suite. If the upswap gets going with the brick, the projector will go up for sale. If the upswap gets going with the projector suite, we'll see if we can sell the brick as a coffee table / plant stand!

Please get in touch with us ASAP and swap with us for something! Anything! We're getting to the point soon where we will have to accept the conditional bank loan if we want our driveway sealed before winter!

Please hurry!

This projector suite was also available for an upswap:

We have a priceless, hand-made by Josh, one-off hidden complete home entertainment system to swap gradually upwards towards our goal of something to the value of $110k. The set contains:
  • a 100 inch electronic drop-down projector screen with remote control
  • surround sound speakers and amplifier / blue ray player
  • HD projector DLP Optima with 3D capability
  • recycled rimu hand-crafted coffee table and hidden box with lift up shelf to hide the projector
  • tv cabinet attached to the projector screen (making it totally wall-friendly for those renting and unable to fix it to the wall).
The sturdy posts holding up the screen could be wallpapered or painted to match your wall coverings, making it relatively disguised while the screen is stored away. They are currently covered with a cream linen-textured wallpaper.

How the swap could work:

Get in touch with us if you think you have something of higher value that we could swap upwards for the next thing. Please do get in contact as soon as possible!

  • comment on this blog with your details
  • message us on our facebook page

We're based in Auckland so can travel around Auckland and nearby towns to do the swap, however as you'll understand we wont be able to travel much further than that with a two year old and a baby, so meeting half-way or receiving a delivery in Auckland would really help us out :)

Josh also regularly travels to Wellington, Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne so also can consider swaps there, as long as the item can fit in luggage to take on the airplane.

*Please note the shelf in the photo on top of the screen is not included in the swap.

  1. I never imagined that beautiful table housed a projector! Josh is really talented. I only wish we had something to swap for it!

Pleasant chat with Mike Hosking

I had a nice chat with Mike Hosking on the Breakfast Show this morning. We talked a bit more about the projector system up for grabs and the dramas with the house build and having to move in unfinished. Here's the audio file if you missed it... Thanks Mike we were honoured to feature on your show! If you are interested in our  Hidden Projector and Sound System  and think you have something to swap for it please get in touch with us: Phone Amy on 0276 354 901 or message us on our  facebook page

Hooray! We did the first swap!

A lot has been happening at the McLaren building site, a lot to celebrate. We've moved across our beds to the main house, still cleaning up concrete dust and plaster dust from some of the rooms, still unpacking, still waiting to hear back from our mortgage broker on the results of a bank application, and have got an employment contract confirming I'll start back at work in July (if not before by mutual arrangement). And, we have made our first swap!

It's (not) getting hot in here...

We're very pleased to find amongst the hot and sticky weather we've had over the past few days, inside our little minor dwelling has been comfortably cool. The inside temperature only changes very slowly, despite what's happening outside. I can put our little bubba to bed at night knowing she's not going to wake up cold in the middle of the night, because it will be the same temperature in the morning as it was the night before (or maybe 1 degree less sometimes). That is gold I tell you! Absolute gold! From someone who, up until a week ago had not had a full night's sleep since before the baby was born (July), she's only now starting to sleep through the night. If I now had to deal with hot days and huge temperature drops at night, I'd still be getting up to deal with that. So we're still sleeping in the unfinished minor dwelling. Our quarters are just clay bricks, concrete floors and roof (and we do have insulation in the ceiling). There
