The Swap

Hi! We're trying to upswap our way to keeping our house!

Initially, we tried starting with our home theatre projector screen set, but we think it was too big an item for the first swap. (Scroll to the bottom of the page for more about that.)

So we went simple and changed it to a block from what our house is made of...which is what the rest of this page is about...

And then we found someone willing to swap their awesome cot with us and agreed to swap a potted lemon tree! See more about our first swap here.

Re-starting the Swap

Upswap us something for a piece of our house! (Update 4.3.18: Note this is no longer available, we've done our first swap now. See our home page on this blog for the latest swap item.)

We're starting again with a very small item to try and get the momentum happening. This is easy for someone to swap something with as it's not worth much! These clay bricks cost us about $30 each but they're not worth anything because we have a handful left and can't sell them. Taking all and any offers for something to swap for it!

These bricks are great as a coffee table or plant holder. We've shown in the photos how some nice wood can be attached to the top. Our 2 year old stained the wood with a home made stain made from vinegar and rusted steel wool - a totally natural piece of furniture with no nasty chemical smells. This particular one has a big circular hole which can be used as a magazine rack. The brick could also be painted. A real talking piece for your living space!

We started out on this swap journey thinking a bigger item would get things rolling sooner - see below for more details about the home theatre projector suite. If the upswap gets going with the brick, the projector will go up for sale. If the upswap gets going with the projector suite, we'll see if we can sell the brick as a coffee table / plant stand!

Please get in touch with us ASAP and swap with us for something! Anything! We're getting to the point soon where we will have to accept the conditional bank loan if we want our driveway sealed before winter!

Please hurry!

This projector suite was also available for an upswap:

We have a priceless, hand-made by Josh, one-off hidden complete home entertainment system to swap gradually upwards towards our goal of something to the value of $110k. The set contains:
  • a 100 inch electronic drop-down projector screen with remote control
  • surround sound speakers and amplifier / blue ray player
  • HD projector DLP Optima with 3D capability
  • recycled rimu hand-crafted coffee table and hidden box with lift up shelf to hide the projector
  • tv cabinet attached to the projector screen (making it totally wall-friendly for those renting and unable to fix it to the wall).
The sturdy posts holding up the screen could be wallpapered or painted to match your wall coverings, making it relatively disguised while the screen is stored away. They are currently covered with a cream linen-textured wallpaper.

How the swap could work:

Get in touch with us if you think you have something of higher value that we could swap upwards for the next thing. Please do get in contact as soon as possible!

  • phone: +64 276 354 901
  • comment on this blog with your details
  • message us on our facebook page

We're based in Auckland so can travel around Auckland and nearby towns to do the swap, however as you'll understand we wont be able to travel much further than that with a two year old and a baby, so meeting half-way or receiving a delivery in Auckland would really help us out :)

Josh also regularly travels to Wellington, Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne so also can consider swaps there, as long as the item can fit in luggage to take on the airplane.

*Please note the shelf in the photo on top of the screen is not included in the swap.

  1. I never imagined that beautiful table housed a projector! Josh is really talented. I only wish we had something to swap for it!

A little encouragement for first home buyers

I thought our interview with Mike Hosking was going to have a bit more about encouraging others to think creatively to get into their first house. Understandably though there was not really much time to fit in everything that was going on. So I thought I'd add a post about how we got into our first house despite it being the hardest time ever to get into a house (which it is every year!) Josh and I were both students and we shared a house with 2 other flatmates. For a year we both received the student loan payments (of around $140 per week) but we didn't spend any of it because we worked jobs while students. When I got my first corporate job after graduating, we bought the above house in a suburb of Auckland near my workplace. Even though banks were lending close to 100% at the time, it was at the height of the property boom near the end of 2006 when prices were through the roof. We bought this 3 bedroom house with a musty smelling rumpus and a separate one bedroom minor...

One small step to stop the world turning to custard

At a social gathering someone was having a whinge about various conspiracy theory governmental issues turning the world to custard. It wore me down over about an hour or so and I finally asked "well what's the answer to this problem, you're clearly upset about it, what are you going to do about it?" The person most likely had no idea, and they turned the question on me. So I replied that I thought permaculture was the answer. And they agreed and that was the end of the conversation, and the whinge. Thank God almighty! Natural and pure is definitely a big trend in food circles these days. Having run a food manufacturing business myself, I'm very aware of what the bigger companies get away with when it comes to food additives. It made me realise the only thing that's 100% trustworthy is food you've grown yourself. Then I stumbled across "permaculture" and completed a certificate in permaculture design. Essentially this word refers to harness...

This here's a top quality craft

In case you've been holding off with your upswap because you're unsure of the quality of Josh's hand-crafted hidden projector unit, I thought I'd post a photo of some of the doors he has made for our house. The one with the white protective coating on it even has a window pane in it! Clearly we've been trying to save on costs left right and centre through this project, so Josh has made some of the doors, all the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, installed all the door frames, plus many other non-building things like driving the digger for weeks moving soil and mulch around. He even dug a very deep long trench in the clay by hand! Anyway the point is as you can see in the above photo, he's very clever. The doors are made with macrocarpa, but he found out about a cool natural stain made from tea and vinegar. It darkens it to a lovely chocolatey colour and it really brings out the silver in the wood. Plus there's no nasty smell from the stain. And the pr...
